Newspaper Scans: 1987 Diet Cherry Coke Paid Editorial!

I went to a small indoor flea market in my neighborhood and came upon a couple fun things. Foremost amongst said cool things was a manila envelope full of magazine and newspaper clippings.

It was mostly coupons and outdated recipes from the newspaper Cooking Section. Recipes that are super heavy in fat and salt. Amongst this envelope of gold was a full page paid advertisement for Diet Cherry 7-Up. What was cool about it was that the ad posed as an editorial about the soda. Like, it was hyping up a new product aimed at the youth market of The 80's! It's the cool new things for kids! From 13-24~!

Here is the entire top part of the ad. I made a smaller cut of the text. It's sort of interesting. It focuses a lot on how the soda is about to break into the So-Cal Market.

You know, the hip 90210 Beverly Hills type Southern California area. You want your Brendan's and your Dylan's to be seen chugging it down so that your everyday normal guys know that it's cool to drink Diet Cherry 7-Up!

The article is actually a little interesting in how it reads more like a press release than it does an informational article about soda-pop, for example how they talk about the commercial direction and it's cutting edge special effects. It's actually sort of cool. It gives you the feeling of being a soda insider, the President of 7 Up!

That piece there is the main event of the whole thing. What a cool graphic! I love the cans. Especially the def pink font that they use on the can. Very 80's. The whole thing has that sort of Over Our Heads Vibe that was popular at the time.

You know Over Our Heads, the store from the later years of Facts Of Life. It was a hip Gift shop type place full of all sorts of trendy 80's items. We had a store like that here in Santa Rosa. It was called Sweet Potato.

I think if you print out this coupon you can use it today. Sure it says that it expired in 1987 but I don't think that coupons ever actually expire but I'm going to leave it up to you to test out that theory.

Anyway, thanks for dropping by. I hoped you enjoyed reading about a snip of newspaper that I found in an envelope at a local junk sale....
